Valley Waymeet to the west of Daevaḥa's Creek
The illustration shows the terrain directly to the west of the lower courses of Daevaḥa Creek in the southern parts of the Mountains of Wisdom. Dense forests of spruce cling to the mist-wreathed slopes further north, and the faint sound of running water can be heard eastward. This area is a well-known historical battlefield, which saw many skirmishes during the primeval days when the Fairy folk of the Crown Lands first migrated into the Middle-Sea regions and encountered the many vicious goblin tribes and other wild monsters that infested the lands in those ancient and veiled times.
There are small pockets of goblins that survived and remain, or that later snuck into these lands from north and east without being noticed, and joined the ancient survivors. These tend to hide in the deeper parts of the many caves in this area, and rarely emerge into the daylight, fearing the patrols of Lord Yberön's knights.
The goblins still found north of the Inner sea tend to be feral and dangerous, having refused (or being simply unable to grasp) the civilization of Yberön's Law. This is in contrast to the southern lands. The majority of the goblins of the Cleftwood and the northern parts of the Moving Mountains are a much tamer breed, with far greater intelligence. They have integrated somewhat into the greater Kingdom, and as reported in the accounts of the Traveller:
> [...] [He] was surprised by the sophisticated below-the-belt humour of the goblins of the Cleftwood Hills that made pilgrimage to take part in the regular flyting tournaments were held in the feast-halls in the City of Bards [...]
In recent times, emissaries of these southern goblins have again been called upon to travel to these lands shown in the illustration, and to make attempts to find and reason with the scattered survivors of the goblins of the north, if possible. This in order to make the area safer for travellers crossing through the Mountains of Wisdom, for a recent initiative of the Crown is a cartographical project supporting increased colonization of the Nouslands. The goblins shown on the illustration (see scroll, right and center) represent the currently roaming troops of these friendly and rather astute emissaries, and not the dangerous cave-dwelling outlaws, which are slightly taller and stronger, but with smaller heads, and much longer arms and clawed fingers.
