Difficulty
Play Vocabulary
Difficulty is a measure of the relative ease with which one may achieve a task or action. Every essay has an explicit or implicit difficulty value. The greater the difficulty, the harder it is to perform the activity.
For example, to climb over a low barrier, or to pull oneself up over a wall, or the penalty if attempting to perform some other complex activity while climbing a steep flight of steps:
"Climb" = 3
To climb to the next level of a large tree without slipping and potentially falling:
"Climb Tree" = 6
Strength is often the deciding attribute in the act of climbing, and thus one's Muscle vital statistics is used when essaying a climb.
"Jump" = 6
A jump with a running start over a distance of 6 measures or more has a difficulty of 6 + 1 for every additional measure of distance. A creature or character must roll at least 6 on a strength check using the muscle statistic to leap a 6 foot gap successfully.
For a capable human-sized creature, a vertical jump to reach a height 6 measures above it's head has a difficulty of 6 x 2 = 12 (this doubling is not performed for creatures naturally inclined to perform great leaps, such as monkeys or tigers).
