Heads turn to face you as you approach. Most of their eyes are welcoming, a few are ambivalent. The youngest do not yet perceive your arrival, being engrossed in their play. The eldest, an old woman wearing an heavy coat and with strange beadwork in her hair, gazes at you suspiciously.
They had been listening to an older man speaking, but he had concluded his speech to the laughter of the youth just as you had rounded the bend.
Now there is an awkward quiet.
